OnForce’s Users, Big and Small, Get Tech Help Online

November 8, 2009

I particularly like this idea. With Craigslist, if you run an ad or answer ad, the odds of connecting with a flake are high. With OnForce, presumably the odds are much lower, because over time most flakes would be eliminated by OnForce from their roster.

LEXINGTON — OnForce Inc. is hoping more people will go online when they need help with installing a home theater system or coaxing a printer back to life.

The company provides an Internet-based portal at www.onforce.com – a sort of virtual marketplace where businesses and individuals can post requests for technology help, and skilled service providers compete to get the work.

Since 2004, OnForce has built a network of more than 13,000 service providers and says it has filled more than 1 million work orders nationwide, ranging from jobs in home living rooms to 1,800 Wal-Mart stores. Services include the installation of home theaters, security systems, computers, and computer networks.

The five-year-old company, which has 55 full-time employees, said one way it differs from websites like Craigslist is that someone can’t simply hang a virtual shingle promoting technology services. It puts applicants through a five-step process, including an interview with an OnForce manager, and verifies any certifications they say they have.
